About Silom

Overview : Silom’s landscape is dominated by highrise office buildings many of which are the head offices of banks and other financial organisations.

During the day its a busy area with congested roads and lots of office workers rushing about their business and though there are relatively few local tourist attractions there is some interesting shopping and plenty of good dining to be had.

In the evenings, however, Silom takes on a different atmosphere as the traffic reduces and a variety of popular nightlife venues open.

Located on the Skytrain route between Lumphini Park and the Chao Phraya River, Silom is well situated for getting to other areas of Bangkok.

Features:

  • Major financial business district
  • Close to the Chao Phraya River
  • Lumphini Park nearby
  • Access to other areas by Skytrain & MRT
  • Good choice of restaurants
  • Busy shopping centre
  • Patpong markets and nightlife

Staying in Silom

Business District with Good Shopping, Restaurants & Nightlife

Silom Complex
Sala Daeng BTS station at Silom, Bangkok
Sala Daeng BTS station is accessible from the main area of shops in Silom Road.

Silom is Bangkok’s financial business district and does not attract foreign tourists in the same numbers as the more central areas such as Siam and Sukhumvhit Rd. It does, however, have quality hotels and is handily placed to explore the rest of the city by being located on the Skytrain route just 10 minutes ride away from the city centre and even closer to the fast ferries on the Chao Phraya River.

Good local dining, some trendy nightlife and its convenient location make Silom worth considering as a place to stay particularly for those who would prefer a slightly more peaceful part of town.

Silom Dining

One of Silom’s best features is the big choice of restaurants available. Whether you fancy Thai or foreign fare such as western, Japanese or Indian its unlikely you’ll have to go far from your hotel to find something to suit your tastes and budget. Additionally, being just a few minutes by taxi or Skytrain from the Chao Phraya River means its easy to join an evening dining cruise or enjoy time in one of the many riverside restaurants.

For travellers on tight budgets there is plenty of tasty and well-priced Thai food available from both street vendors and cafes. Most of the famous fast food giants can also be found in the main shopping area at the Lumphini Park end of Silom Road.

Silom Nightlife

While not immediately noticable from the main road, Silom does possess a decent amount of nightlife often tucked away down its side streets or contained within the larger hotels such as the trendy Maggie Choo’s in the Novotel Bangkok.

Silom is also well known as the home of the Patpong market and night life area. Though somewhat infamous for its gogos and sex shows it still has a few lively bars that are enjoyed by all sorts of tourists and can provide a fun evening for those not disturbed by the red-light atmosphere.

Getting Around

As long as your hotel is situated near upper Silom Road or lower Sathorn a Skytrain station will be within walking distance see map below).

The Chao Phraya River fast ferries are only a few minutes away by rail or taxi and provide a great way to see many of the most popular tourist attractions such as wat Arun, Wat Pho, The Grand Palace and Chintown.
